Is it just me? Does anyone else think it’s strange that we are focusing so much attention to the NFL refs instead of solving major issues like poverty, our economy, the lack of our politicians to compromise, health care issues, and our disregard for the environment? I know that sports, movies, concerts provide a respite in troubled times…but really, focusing on a football game instead of a giving a child access to a healthy meal and a good education, and helping create jobs? Really?

I recently saw an ad from Williams Sonoma for the perfect pan for eggs. I remember a time when I would have rushed out and snagged one. After all, that would add to my ever-increasing arsenal of tools needed to create the perfect event, that bite-by-bite delicious brunch that would catapult me to the echelons of Kansas City’s best hosts, dame of the ice sculpture and pot de crème. Today I react quite differently to an enticement for a must-have egg cooker.  My gut tightens, my muscles quiver a moment. The perfect omelet pan? Today? In this economy? Are people still so self-involved that an expensive piece of aluminum-coated stainless steel would lure them to part with their money?

The answer is obviously “Yes” and I am guilty of self absorption in other areas, so I better be careful when I’m throwing stones. Do I really need to use a $20 Tweezerman to pluck my aging eyebrows when the generic brand would provide the same service? Do I need to live where I live, drive the car I drive (but I do get about 45 mpg!)? So, using my criteria of “necessary” versus “extravagant” and “irrelevant”, I’ll stick by my view of the NFL furor and the to-die-for egg pan. After all, this is MY blog, isn’t it?
