For the first time ever, Virgin Galactic allowed a journalist inside the VSS Enterprise. While she isn't yet decked out with her plush interior decor, this story, the beginning of a series about Virgin Galactic, is well worth the read!

Botswana: A Daring Rescue Plan was almost hatched – and other musings

Uncategorized No Comments »

Dsc_0067

Leaving Johannesburg and jet lag behind, we flew to Maun, Botswana. While standing in line to clear Immigration, I heard the loud chirping of birds. I enjoyed the symphony of chirps until I detected the source of the music. There were approximately 20 cartons of baby chicks awaiting something—what that something was, I really don't know. None of the scenarios I conjured up had happy endings for the chicks (how I so quickly forget the positive outcomes for humans and over- identify with the chickens). My mind raced through a myriad of escape plans for the petite fowl while my passport and entry card were processed and stamped. Drats! I ran out of time to incubate and hatch the perfect plan and in a few short minutes we were whisked through security and led to the boarding area for our flight to Duba Plains. Shamefully, once the chicks were out of sight and hearing distance, I forgot to focus on saving their precious little lives and started dreaming instead about what wildlife we'd see in Botswana.

If you like lions, you will love Duba Plains. Located in the Okavanga Delta, the largest inland delta in the world, animals in this part of Botswana have learned to adapt to the marshes, swamps, and islands that comprise the region. We witnessed a pride of lions swimming in a marsh—yes, swimming! We were pleasantly surprised to see Lizzy, the camp's General Manager. We had met Lizzy 3 years ago when she was Assistant GM at Mombo, a wonderful and very popular camp that is known for its "cats." Lizzy reminds me of a warm, fuzzy version of Whoopie Goldberg. She has a laugh that starts deep in her belly and radiates through her body ending in a boisterous howl from her lips and loving grin on her face.

Our game drives were longer than we had experienced on prior safaris-great for seeing wildlife and superior for an African massage! What is an African Massage, you ask? Envision sitting in the back row of an All Terrain Land Rover-type vehicle, not much padding on the seat, and shock absorbers—do these vehicles have them? Put the aforementioned truck on pitted dirt roads, swampy marshes, or offroad and you will then experience what we lovingly call the "African Massage."

From Duba Plains we flew to Savuti Camp, a little more polished in accomodations but having a little more formal staff. Savuti is considerably drier than Duba Plains and the vegetation is drastically thicker. This area is known for its elephants and occasional sightings of wild dogs. Warning: Do NOT pet these dogs unless you are volunteering to become their next meal. We saw many, many elephants including a testosterone-filled male teenager who had to snort, swing his trunk and mock charge us to show off for the girls. We were fortunate to find the pack of wild dogs, animals who cover up to 30 miles in one day. Scientists have implanted microchips in some of them and track their movement to see the exact distances they travel. The device, which we spotted on 2 dogs, reminded me of the "house arrest" collars (a/k/a invisible fence collars) our 2 four-legged kids wear. Remind me to tell my dogs that we're really just monitoring how far they travel (and, in a sense, that's true!). We added cheetah and leopard to our list of predators, enjoyed the staff singing and dancing and sadly bid farewell to Savuti. Off to Vic Falls…but it's very late and I have to be up in 6 hours….yawn! Sweet Dreams!

I’d pick more daisies

Our clients, Jeff and Katy Wald, enjoyed visiting an elephant up close and personal at the Elephant Sanctuary!

As we depart Johannesburg for Duba Plains, Botswana, I want to leave you a thought, written by Nadine Stair:

If I had my life to live over again, I'd try to make more mistakes next time. I would relax. I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been on this trip. I know of very few things I would take seriously. I would take more trips. I would climb more mountains, swim more rivers and watch more sunsets. I would do more walking and looking. I would eat more ice cream and fewer beans. I would have more actual problems and fewer imaginary ones. You see, I am one of those people who live prophylactically and sensibly and sanely hour after hour, day after day. Oh, I've had my moments, and if I had to do it over again, I'd have more of them. In fact, I'd try to have nothings else. Just a moment, one after another instead of living so many years ahead each day. I have been one of those people who never go anywhere without a thermometer, a hot water bottle, a garlge, a raincoat, aspirin and a parachute. If I had it to do again, I would go places, do things and travel lighter than I have.
If I had my life over, I would start bare-footed earlier in the spring and stay that wya later in the fall. I would play hockey more, I wouldn't make such good grades expet by accidnet. I would ride more merry-g–rounds. I'd pick more daisies.

Greetings from Johannesburg, South Africa. Our flight from Atlanta to Jo'burg was uneventful (a very good thing). Delta offered a great selection of movies and I finally saw The King's Speech. I believe Michael and I were the only ones who had yet to see this Oscar grabbing film. I started to watch the Social Network but I realized I wouldn't stay awake for the whole thing. I switched to what Delta calls Spa music (restful New Age, to the rest of us) and fell blissfully asleep. Flight time (tires to ground and not gate-to-gate) from Atlanta to Jo'burg is 14 hours 45 minutes. The difference in actual time from Jo'burg to our home in Kansas City is 7 hours.. My watch tells me it's 9:15 PM Wednesday, March 23, and at home it's 2:15 PM. We get up tomorrow at 7:00 AM—which is Midnight at home.

Tintswalowaterfall_suite

We're staying 2 nights at Tintswalo at Waterfall. Don't let the hotel's description of the property fool you. It is purposelly built like a "barn" they brag. Sounds a little ominous to me, but they quickly assure you that the rooms are all luxury—-and so they are! We have a large junior suites with a very comfy king-sized bed, 2 sueded leather chairs, an armoire with all things electronic and snackable, a large bath with separate tub and large rainfall-style shower and, as we all joke in the travel industry, it is wall and floor "marble." That's kind of an inside joke from several years ago at Virtuoso's annual Travel Mart. Every hotelier that we met showed up pictures of their properties and always , yes ALWAYS, included a snap or two of the "marble bath".

Tomorrow we're going to an elephant orphanage in the morning, indulging in tranquil spa experiences in the afternoon and a dinner prepared by Tintswalo's gourmet chefs. On Friday we fly to Maun, Botswana and then on to Duba Plains (where the famous National Geographic docmuentary of the lions versus the buffalo was filmed).

One interesting incident: in Atlanta before boarding the plane, the captain addressed the passengers waiting to board. It's never a good sign when you see the captain reach for the microphone in the waiting area. Michael rushed forward to better hear what we expected to be very bad news—a delay, a mechanical issue, yada, yada, yada; but, no, it was just a friendly captain welcoming us, explaining that 2 complete crews are aboard because of the length of the flight, and thanked us for flying Delta. Has Delta revamped their policy of customer scare to customer care? Seems so, doesn't it?

……to be continued….

Virgin Galactic’s latest news: Space Bulletin-March 2011

SpaceShipTwo completes her first glide flight.

MILESTONES TO SPACE

2010 was an incredible year for Virgin Galactic that saw several important milestones achieved on the road to making private space travel a reality.

After the dramatic unveiling of SpaceShipTwo in December 2009, this revolutionary new space vehicle embarked on a series of important test flights in 2010 that culminated with her first solo flight when she was released from her "mothership" WhiteKnightTwo to complete a stunning glide flight and landing at Mojave Air & Spaceport. Since then she has completed a total of four glide flights and these will continue throughout 2011 as SpaceShipTwo is readied for the next major milestone, the first powered flight with the rocket motor.

In 2010 the rocket motor, known as RocketMotorTwo, underwent extensive development and testing. The next milestone for this part of the project is another extensive "hot fire" test that will be undertaken over the coming months before pairing RocketMotorTwo with SpaceShipTwo for several non-powered test flights. Next SpaceShipTwo will complete multiple powered flights, gradually increasing duration and altitude in the lead up to our first ever spaceflight.

Our operational base in New Mexico, Spaceport America, has seen significant development. The runway was completed in 2010 along with around 70% of the structures including the "THF" or Terminal Hangar Facility, the stunning building designed by URS/Foster + Partners that will serve as the hangar and training facility for Virgin Galactic as well as housing Mission Control. Currently the hangar doors and windows are being fitted and the next step in 2011 is to begin fitting out the interior.

We will continue to send you Space Bulletins in order to keep you updated on each step in this exciting and historic project.

News from Azamara Quest: In Japanese waters – Travel Weekly

Uncategorized No Comments »

Travel Weekly Editor in Chief Arnie Weissmann is sailing onboard the Azamara Quest from Hong Kong to Osaka, Japan, and reporting back. His latest report, from Nagasaki, follows:

15:58 pm, local time: Azamara Quest is calling in Nagasaki, Japan, and Cruise Director Russ Grieve is in his cabin watching CNN. He sees a report that an 8.9 magnitude earthquake has occurred off the northeast coast of Japan, and that a tsunami warning has been issued. He immediately phones hotel director Philip Herbert and reports what he heard. Herbert immediately call Captain Carl Smith, who is in his office.

16:00: Smith calls Miami and wakes up his Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. “DPA” — Designated Person Ashore — using his personal quad-band cell phone. (Azamara is owned by RCCL.) Japanese law forbids satellite Internet links or telephone communication from ships within its territorial waters, which Smith realizes is going to complicate communications significantly. He cannot use the Internet to gather information firsthand.

Azamara's captainHe first tells the DPA that the ship is safe, no one is injured and the Quest is not in imminent danger. However, he says, the ship is in Nagasaki, in the southwest of Japan, and there’s been an earthquake and a tsunami off the northeast coast of the country. He reported that, although onboard navigation systems (channels which remain open regardless of local regulations) were operational, he had no other means to get information and that web tools were unavailable.

16:05: Smith tells the ship’s safety officer and third in command of the ship, Christos Dekatris, that he will not be getting off in Nagasaki to begin his leave as planned. He asks him to instead sit in the captain’s office and watch CNN and report developments. As it turns out, Tokyo airport is closed, and Dekatris would not have been able to leave Nagasaki that evening in any case.

16:05: The DPA begins waking up RCCL’s emergency response team, which includes shoreside managers in Miami, London and Asia as well as deployment officers, public relations personnel and marine and hotel operations senior management. The DPA asks them to be fully prepared for a conference call with the ship at 16:45.

16:10: The captain asks Japanese authorities for permission to turn on his satellite communications system. The request is denied, but he is given permission to turn them on nine miles from the port rather than waiting until he’s in international waters.
16:45: Smith provides the emergency response team with information about the ship’s precise geographic location. Others on the call report about tsunami forecasts that are available online. The team focuses on the question of whether to sail or remain alongshore in Nagasaki. Remaining in port, where the water is relatively shallow, is rejected in favor of getting into deeper water quickly.

The team also discusses whether the ship should plan to continue to its next port of call, Osaka, which it would reach in 38 hours. Among the concerns are whether that city had been affected by the quake and whether it would be appropriate to call at a port in a country which may be in mourning.

It is decided they do not have enough information, and they defer a decision. They will review the question in another call later in the evening. The public relations team says it will prepare communications to get the word out, through various Internet outlets, that the Quest is safe, including Facebook and Twitter, and to alert travel agents so that friends and family of passengers will be reassured.

17:42: The last passenger who went ashore in Nagasaki returns to the ship.

17:45: Smith gets on the public address system. He asks for everyone’s attention, and explains that a strong earthquake has struck in northeast Japan and that a 10-meter tsunami is anticipated. He reassures the passengers that they are in one of the safest, sheltered bays on the other side of the country, but that he would like to get to deep water quickly. He reports that he understands that passengers are concerned that their loved ones might be worried about them, and explains the communications plan to get the word out that they are okay.

“Our thoughts go out to our loved ones who are worried about us and those who have suffered loss of family members in the region,” he says before signing off.

17:49: Smith gets on the public address system again and asks all crew with cabins on Deck 3 that have portholes to return to their cabins and make sure that their deadlights are secured (deadlights are solid steel hinged covers which completely cover portholes). He explains that this is simply a precaution and that he does not anticipate that there will be any problems.

He further asks that all crew in the bar and food areas to make sure that their items are secure. Again, he explains that this is simply a precaution, but that it’s better to have everything done before any need might arise.

17:54: The ship’s engines are started and the Quest begins to pull away from the pier, six minutes ahead of scheduled sailing. In the interest of time, the captain has opted not to have a local pilot on the bridge to assist in navigation out of Nagasaki. (Pilots are not required in this port.)

18:28: The ship is in deep water. The captain phones his wife to tell her he and the ship are safe.

Our partners know how to take care of our clients. Here’s an example of true professionalism (glad the captain finally phoned his wife!!!):
