If you haven’t met David Morgan-Hewitt, put him on your “Must meet” list! David is the Managing Director of the uber popular and award-winning Goring Hotel in London. A few months ago we lunched with David and from amuse-bouche to petit-fours, he regaled us with stories about his neighbors, the Royal Family. Did you know that Queen Elizabeth II enjoyed the Lady Gaga concert?
David is now educating the world on manners. Below is his second post on manners and it’s soooooooo David:
Riding in a lift (or an elevator to our friends over the pond)
It is always a complete joy to have the lift completely to yourself. You can use the time to switch off for a moment or two or to gather your thoughts ready for your next meeting if working.
However, most of the time we are sharing our lift with a lot of other people. In fact at certain times we will find ourselves squashed like sardines into them. So what are the dos and don’ts of lift etiquette?
Do: Hold the door open for anybody who is running to catch it. There is little worse than missing a lift when you are running late. Also if you travel that lift regularly, they might do the same for you on another occasion.
Do: Use the stairs if only going up one floor. The lift is more use to those on the 40th floor!
Do: Press your own button, do not expect another passenger to act as the lift operator. Unless they offer to do so.
Don’t: Put on your make up when sharing a lift. It is rather common!
Don’t: Cough, splutter and sniff unless you really have to – it is most off putting to other travellers.
Don’t: Sing or talk to yourself – it can be very disturbing on so many levels.
We left the chill of winter and are in more temperate climes. While not exactly tropical, we are in Little Rock for Virtuoso’s South Central Regional meeting. Locals complained about a recent spat of snow, of which we saw faint traces. The Capital Hotel, beautifully restored, is Little Rock’s grand dame. We toured the kitchen and saw a demonstration of magnetic heat. We want one of those contraptions. Do you think anyone would notice us trying to take it? Doesn’t everyone travel with an entourage of burly big load movers? And the elevator!!! Huge is an understatement. Rumor has it that Ulysses S. Grant wanted his horse with him when he stayed at this historic property, hence an elevator of truly immense proportions. Nobody was been able to verify this tale, but no one can disprove it!
Below is a video The Capital Hotel presented when we saw them at Travel Mart in 2009. This is definitely not stodgy. Consider it gracious Southern with a sophisticated twist!
