All together now, “No more clamshells!”

Uncategorized No Comments »

Let's start with the fact that I am not talking about bivalve mollusks! I am starting a campaign to end "clamshell packaging." Below are a few examples of the dreaded, demonic stuff:

Okay, now that we are all on the same page, let me describe my most recent experience with this evil, non-environmentally friendly invention.

This afternoon I purchased a Flip Video, a simple-to-use camcorder that plugs into one's computer via USB. Hopefully, in the near future, I'll share some priceless video moments with you here…that is, if and when I can extract the Flip from its clamshell.

In theory, packaging something in an attractive and non-shoplifting manner makes perfect sense. After all, the Flip is small (not much bigger than a cell phone), valuable and could easily be pocketed and whisked out of a store without anyone noticing. In reality I know that clamshells were the invention of some demented mental hospital workers, orthopaedic surgeons, dentists, and nail technicians—and don't forget knife sharpeners!

Arriving home I set the entombed Flip on the kitchen counter and studied it. Where should I make the first cut, stab, saw-mark? What tools need I assemble to tackle the "freeing of the Flip"? I gathered a plethora of items that might, just might (if I hold my grip tight enough) yield a small sliver of an opening that, God willing (You are willing, aren't you, God?), will eventually lead to Flip Freedom. The scissors were useless—how many times, Barbara, must you try the scissors routine? Don't you know that clamshells have an anti-scissors sensor and cripple the hand trying to use scissors? Ahhhh, maybe this will work—corn-on-the-cob skewers! They're very sharp and might pierce the clamshell; but, alas, while they did pierce a small hole, the clamshell beat back the skewers and bent them—yes, bent them! The nerve! Okay, now I'm getting serious–the fight is on! Out comes the Cutco serrated knife (Cutco, you do promise to sharpen my knives for life, right?). Eureka! I got a 4 inch opening and…

Ouch! OMG, my aching thumb! Where's Dr. Cheng and her magic steroid shot when I need her (it's cool, I'm not a ball player!). Holding my now useless right hand with my fairly non-functioning left hand, I surveyed the imprisoned Flip. I swear it was laughing at me, thinking how funny it would be to video me trying to extricate it from the clamshell. Oh dear, now I'm hallucinating…help!  I mopped the sweat that, by now, was dripping down my face, dried my hands, and with renewed vigor used my Cutco saw, I mean knife, and little by little, I created another 4 inch opening perpendicular to the first!

I am 61 years old and will never win a strength contest—especially hand strength, so I couldn't just peel the plastic back to release my prize, the Flip. However, forever the optimist, I continued hacking away at the clamshell. It was getting personal now–Barbara versus the clamshell (I wonder what the Vegas odds would have been?).

I won't bore you with the rest of the details—suffice to say, perseverance paid off and I am proudly holding my new toy. Have you ever had to return something and you are instructed to bring it back in its original packaging or there will be a "restocking fee?" There is no way, should I need to return the flip that I can restore the packaging to its "original" shape and, speaking of fees, who is going to pay for my visit to the orthopaedic surgeon, the nail technician, and the knife sharpener (not to worry, Dr. Mingos, I didn't try to use my teeth!)???

So, what's your take on clamshell packaging? Sony has decided to quit using it. Let's get people via Twitter, Facebook, whatever, to rise up and scream, "I'm mad as Hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

Every day I encounter new properties, ships, destinations, unique venues and, frankly, I have become pretty jaded. Don’t talk to me about fluff—talk to me about substance, about experience!

Yesterday our friend Janet Kato White stopped by for a visit. We’ve known Janet from the Halekulani days and, more recently, from the Montage Laguna Beach (which, by the way, is a “Must Stay” in our book!). Janet acquainted me with a property that just was invited to join the select group of Virtuoso recommended properties, the Lodge & Spa at Three Forks Ranch. This is the perfect place to get away from it all, as a couple, a family, a multi-generational group. Fly-fishing, horseback riding, spa treatments are some of the summer options; concierge alpine skiing, trekking on a snow-shoe tour your own pace, cross country skiing, snowmobiling and relaxing spa visits will keep you busy in the winter. Three Forks is NOT someone’s whim—it is a well thought-out, well executed, environmentally conscious working ranch—with an infrastructure that is jaw-dropping.

Run, gallop, fly—get thee to Three Forks Ranch today! Tell me which day you’d like to begin this true Life Experience!

Email me @travelingking1@gmail.com

I wish I could share all of the photos we have of this amazing creation; however, this is just a blog not a encyclopedic tome! Below is Three Forks Ranch own description, which I reprint here:

Welcome to the World’s Only Five-Billion Star Resort.

The Lodge & Spa at Three Forks Ranch

“Much like a crown of royalty, the Sierra Madres set at the top of the outdoor recreational world. Offering miles of unmatched trout streams, soaring mountain tops, and limitless                acres of Aspen covered meadows; this magical playground offers more activities than a day can hold.

The crown jewel of this outdoor paradise awaits you at The Lodge and Spa at Three Forks Ranch. Complimenting nature’s grandeur, Three Forks offers a place to come back                      to. A glass of wine, a gathering of friends, life well lived.

Beamed cathedral ceilings, exquisitely hand carved European paneling, and majestic yet elegant fireplaces define the Lodge as an architectural monument; a befitting                                 exclamation in this land of wonder.

After a glorious day of fly-fishing or alpine skiing, return to your luxurious room, experience an exhilarating massage, enjoy your favorite libation at the Middle Fork Lounge, and              satisfy your palate with our five star dining. Offering only 15 bedrooms, The Lodge and Spa at Three Forks Ranch honors our guests with a unique combination of warm                          hospitality, unspoiled   privacy, and lavish comfort.”

Using the most modern mode of travel to experience a bygone era!

Uncategorized No Comments »

My friends at Greaves Tours alerted me to this and, while earlier today I’ve already promoted your “detecting” the splendor of Eagle Island Camp, Botswana, I thought I’d offer the option to “discern” the finer points of Rajasthan! Feast your eyes on this!

THE SIMPLE LUXURY of time and space harmoniously blend together on our newest tour traveling by private plane and staying at the exceptional tranquil retreat resorts by the Aman group. Begin your journey in Delhi staying in the elegant haven of the Aman New Delhi, an ideal base from which to experience the city’s wealth of historical and contemporary attractions. Fly by private plane to India’s dramatic state of Rajasthan to Amanbagh, which pays elegant homage to the architecture and design of the palatial grandeur of the Moghul era. Reflect on bygone days at Aman-I-Khas near Ranthambore National Park, where there is a good chance of spotting the elusive Bengal tiger.

DAY 1 ARRIVE DELHI
On arrival stay at The Aman Hotel. Rest of the day at leisure to enjoy a complimentary reflexology treatment at the hotel spa.

DAY 2 DELHI
Late morning explore the myriad sights of Old and New Delhi including a short cycle rickshaw ride. The wide boulevards of Lutyens’ New Delhi contrast dramatically with the narrow streets and scattered monuments that dominate Old Delhi. An evening guided walk through Lodhi Garden is followed by tea and a spa at your hotel.

DAY 3 DELHI – JAISINGHPURA – AJABGARH
After breakfast transfer to Delhi’s domestic airport to board the Greaves private plane for Agra where, upon arrival, there is plenty of time to visit the enchanting Taj Mahal monument. Later, board the private plane and road to Amanbagh and stay at the Amanbagh Hotel. Enjoy a head or foot massage at the hotel spa.

DAY 4 AJABGARH Your choice of activities today. Either take an early morning excursion by jeep to Bhangarh, the abandoned City of Ghosts, for Yoga and breakfast; or an afternoon village tour of the Ajabgarh Valley by either camel cart or open jeep. The head and foot massage at the hotel spa is the perfect way to end the day.

DAY 5 AJABGARH – JAISINGHPURA – SAWAI MADHOPUR – RANTHAMBORE
After a leisurely start, transfer by road to Jaisinghpura airstrip to board the Greaves private plane for Sawai Madhopur. On arrival transfer by road to Ranthambore and stay at the Aman-I-Khas Hotel. Travel by camel safari this evening to explore the outskirts of the park and rural villages.

DAY 6 RANTHAMBORE
Morning and afternoon game viewing in Ranthambore National Park by Jeep or deluxe canter. This evening’s private dinner is by the step-well within the camp.

DAY 7 RANTHAMBORE – SAWAI MADHOPUR – DELHI
Return to Delhi by early morning train, with butler service on board. Arrive Delhi and transfer to The Aman Hotel for an afternoon at leisure. Late evening transfer to the airport.

DAY 8 DEPART DELHI
Early morning departure for onward destination.

Crowds gathered when VMS Eve landed at Oshkosh earlier today!

Uncategorized No Comments »

Since I first “met” Eve almost a year ago, the team at Scaled Composites have taken her for multiple test flights. Today was her first appearance before the general  public when she arrived at the Oshkosh Airshow. She’ll be flying on Tuesday and Thursday and will depart on Saturday. So, if you can get to Oshkosh this week, tell Eve I send my regards! She is one sexy lady!

WhiteKnightTwo to Make World Debut at Oshkosh
VMS Eve to Open Day 1 AirVenture Air Show

 Virgin Mothership (VMS) Eve

As the era of clean, safe, and affordable access to space dawns, the pioneers at Virgin Galactic and Scaled Composites have again chosen EAA AirVenture Oshkosh as the stage for unveiling their innovations. After successfully completing its initial flight test program, space launch vehicle Virgin Mothership (VMS) Eve will make its world public debut on July 27 at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2009.

The space launch vehicle will arrive as part of the opening-day air show. AirVenture attendees will have opportunities for up-close viewing of the vehicle on the ground each day until its departure flight as part of the Saturday, Aug. 1 air show. Event organizers and Virgin Galactic officials are hopeful to arrange additional showcase flights during the week.

"This will be a major highlight of our event. Since the appearance of the X-Prize-winning WhiteKnight and SpaceShipOne at AirVenture four years ago, our members have eagerly awaited the next advancements from the Virgin Galactic and Scaled Composites innovators," said EAA president and AirVenture chairman Tom Poberezny.

"Burt Rutan, the chief designer of Virgin Galactic’s launch vehicle and spacecraft, truly embodies the EAA spirit. His accomplishments show how far our passion for building and flying aircraft can go. Over the decades, this EAA member has created some of the world’s most inventive designs, including the vehicles that will take private-citizen astronauts into space. We’re all eager to welcome Burt and his team back to Oshkosh," Poberezny said.

"Likewise, the EAA community is eager to applaud Virgin Galactic for employing corporate muscle and mettle to bring ambitious dreams within reach," he added.

Will Whitehorn, President of Virgin Galactic commented: "Our new launch vehicle, VMS Eve, is both visually remarkable and represents ground-breaking aerospace technology. It has a unique heavy lift, high altitude capability and an open architecture driven design that provides for maximum versatility in the weight, mass, and volume of its payload potential. VMS Eve is capable of lifting SpaceShipTwo, an unmanned satellite launch or space science vehicle and also being capable of use as an astronaut training vehicle. Its carbon composite construction also gives unprecedented fuel efficiency and the strength to perform high g maneuvers and parabolic flight," he said.

"Together with Scaled Composites, we are delighted to be showcasing this incredible vehicle and demonstrating its capabilities in public for the very first time. It is particularly appropriate that we are doing this at the 2009 AirVenture event in conjunction with the EAA, which has done so much over the years to support and promote aerospace innovation," Whitehorn added.

According to Whitehorn, Virgin Galactic plans to conduct test flights of VMS Eve carrying SpaceShipTwo during the second half of 2009.

Dwarfing its namesake predecessor, WhiteKnightTwo is the world’s largest all carbon composite flying vehicle. The 140-foot wingspan is the longest single carbon composite aviation component ever manufactured. The launch vehicle’s mission will include ferrying SpaceShipTwo and thousands of private astronauts, science packages, and payload on the first stage of the Virgin Galactic sub-orbital space experience.
