I should brush up on my Spanish…
Travel December 10th, 2008As we were walking through the Bogota Airport to reboard the plane to Santiago, I realized that we were the only non-Spanish-speaking people in the crowd. Although we listened to the Flight Attendant’s message (in Spanish and English), we missed the part that told everyone to disembark in Bogata and reboard again after we go through another security check.
Nine years of French, 2 years of Spanish, and 1 semester of Italian has left me speaking Frenitalianish. I understand a few words but not enough to converse in any of the 3 languages. I’d like to learn Spanish again. It’s so often used and it’s fairly easy to learn.
I hate it when the Ugly American Tourist emerges in me. In Bogata I asked a security guard a question (in English) and was answered with, “No hablo ingles.” Why should he speak English and why was I so thoughtless to not review some basic Spanish? Did I once again succumb to the snobbish US notion that everyone should speak English? Seems so…
